FAQ Friday: Pet trusts

On Friday, December 29th, attorney Candice Joy discusses pet trusts.

There is a provision in place for pets in your general durable of attorney. There are three additional places that pets should also be referenced.

Though pets don’t specifically qualify as personal property, it would be helpful to list them in their memorandum. That way there is an easy place to spot this detail.

Another suggestion is to write a letter that highlights your wishes and it should be kept in the front of your estate planning binder.

Finally, verbally discussing whom you hope to care for your pet and how is also important so they aren’t blindsided.
